Contact your State Senator and Governor Meyer and tell them to support House Bill 1 to create a cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs for Delaware.

House Bill 1 (HB1) will create a cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs for Delaware. Issues relating to veterans in the First State are currently handled by the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs, which would continue its work under a Secretary who has direct advisory access to the Governor.

This bipartisan bill has multiple sponsors in both houses of the Legislature and has been passed by the House. The Veterans Affairs Committee of the State Senate is currently reviewing it.

The Delaware Democratic Veterans and Military Families Caucus fully supports this legislation. To ensure its passage by the full Senate and approval by the Governor, we ask that all veterans contact their state senator and the Governor’s office to express their support.

Contact information for all state senators and maps of their districts can be found HERE.

House and Senate sponsors of the bill can be found HERE.

Here is a sample text you can use for your message:

”Dear Senator XXXXXX:

I am a <your service> veteran. I am writing to ask for your support for House Bill 1, which would establish a cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs, currently being considered in the State Senate.

The 70,000 Delawareans who have worn the uniform of the United States have earned such representation in the halls of government and deserve the highest level of attention from their elected officials. A Secretary of Veterans Affairs would ensure that attention.

Thank you in advance for your vote in favor of House Bill 1.”

For Governor Meyer, you can use this text:

Subject: Sign the Department of Veterans Affairs Bill

“Governor Meyer, I am a <your service> veteran.  The Senate is currently reviewing HB1, which will establish the state Department of Veterans Affairs. As a veteran, I support this bill, and when it comes to you for your signature, I urge you to sign it.

The 70,000 Delawareans who have worn the uniform of the United States have earned such representation in the halls of government and deserve the highest level of attention from their elected officials. A Secretary of Veterans Affairs would ensure that attention.

Thank you for supporting Delaware’s veterans.”

Also, ask your friends, neighbors, and family members to send their support, and be sure to include your veteran status and branch of service in your closing.
